PRINCE OF NOWHERE (short film)

In this experimental short film, Selam Bekele travels through time and space to interact with the kidnapped Prince of Ethiopia during his final living days in West Yorkshire, England in 1879.

With improvised monologues by Yacob Zuriaw, and acoustic melodies by jazz artist, Meklit Hadero, Bekele's film is a contemporary interpretation of the nomadic condition.

The film is coupled with an interactive puzzle piece, “Something That Keeps Me Moving,” which encourages users to communicate their own migration stories through the art of intuition and empty space.

Prince of Nowhere premiered at Studio Grand as a part of the Home [away from] Home Festival funded by the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) .

It continued screening at the Rosetta Hunter Gallery in Seattle, WA, Afrofuturism Ball in Philadelphia, Weeksville Heritage Center in New York and finally at the CinemAfrica Festival in Stockholm, Sweden. It has since been available for private screenings.

Prince of Nowhere, along with Bekele’s additional works, was recently cited in an essay by Dr. Amsale Alemu in Global Ethiopian Diaspora published by University of Rochester Press.
